Ready for some action?

Do it

“Just do it.”

- Nike

The picture above is from the whiteboard over my desk. I put this quote up to remind myself not to put things off. I used to be a terrible procrastinator. And still am with some things. Like writing this post at 11:44 pm for example. But I am doing it.

I’m the kind of person who wants everything I do to be perfect. So I overthink a lot of things and am in my head most of the time, which leads to an instinct to hesitate when doing things like, well, this blog.

While I know it’s not as good as it could be and that I need to invest more time in it, I’ve at least started. And that’s what really counts. There is immense power in action. When you have an idea, it’s powerless when it’s just floating around in your head. But as soon as you tell someone about it, you’ve unleashed it into the world and that person will start thinking about it and, if possible, will help you or find others who can help you. It becomes real at that point, by simple uttering the words (or even writing them down) you’ve taken the first step towards completing the project or goal.

Another incredible thing about action is how much it tells you about your priorities (or others). For example – if you say you want to pay off debt, but continue to use a credit card to buy things you can’t afford, then your actions are telling you what your true priority is. Actions really do speak louder than words. I find this to be very useful in learning more about myself. Tracking what I spend my time doing tells me a lot about myself and what’s really important to me.

So this week, I challenge you to either start something you’ve been putting off or look at how you’re spending your time to see if it matches with what you say is important in your life. Let me know how it goes.

I hope it’s a great week all!

  • I am QUEEN procrastinator. From cleaning the house into wee hours of the morning before company comes to thinking I have all the time in the world before needing to be somewhere then suddenly I’m rushing around or needing to plan an outline to a vacation, having a year to do it and I’m staring at a weak attempt at one 2 weeks before take off. Procrastinating puts added stress on a situation that really doesn’t need it. Putting off what we know needs to be done just makes what is often times what should be an easy thing into something we dread. Thanks for the food for thought as usual!

  • I wish I could remember the name of the philosopher who said that the time you are given to complete a project is directly proportionate to the time it will take you to complete it but he is absolutely right!

You make a great point about one’s actions being a window into their true priorities though and it is something that we should all try to read more and gather Intel on ourselves so that we can learn to understand ourselves even better in the long run.
